3D Landscape

Project Description: Create a three dimensional representation of a landscape with three or more layers.

  • 3Dproject7

Designed by: Kirby Meng

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Materials:

  • Grafix Dura-lar wet media film for watercolor
  • Grafix Dura-lar Matte finish film for ink or colored pencil
  • Grafix Chipboard for base, the black gives it a nice clean look, but the white is also nice
  • Paper and pencil for planning and drawing of full size design
  • White chipboard for other color media, such as water-soluble pastels
  • Ruler to measure pieces and score “L” pieces
  • Knife for scoring and to cut out the front parts of the landscape to get the layered effect
  • Glue
  • Medium that you have chosen to use

Steps to Make This:

  1. Create a sketch of the landscape you are going to draw or paint.
  2. This project can be done in any medium using many of the Grafix products for a wonderful range of results. Decide which you will use.
  3. Determine what is in the foreground, middle ground and background and decide if you will have just these three layers or possibly more.
  4. Once you have decided, break the landscape down so that you know what is included in each layer.
  5. The layers further back will be taller than those near the front so that you can see them beyond the more forward parts of the landscape. The sizes can be adjusted to suit you.
  6. Draw each layer on an individual sheet of the product you have chosen. The back layer can remain square or rectangular, but the closer ones should have some pieces sticking up higher than others to help achieve the 3D effect.
  7. Use a knife to cut these shapes out once drawn. If using the chipboard, I use an emery board to smooth the edges a bit before I begin to add color.
  8. Add color or value to all of the pieces.
  9. Once all of the pieces are complete, attach them to a base at regular or irregular intervals so that all of the pieces are seen at the place you want them in the landscape. It is helpful to make “L” shaped pieces of chipboard, by scoring and bending them. Then the upright part can be glued to the back of the picture and the horizontal part can be glued to your chipboard base.
