Lampshade with Craft Plastic pt 2
Project Description: . Decorate 12 x 24 Craft Plastic using gel plate mono prints. Layering abstract
designs to create the perfect material for a beautiful decorative lamp shade.
Designed by: Celia Buchanan
Materials:
• Grafix Craft Plastic White 12” x 24”
• Amsterdam Standard Acrylics
• GelPress Mono Printing Plate 5 x7’ or 8 x 10”
• Brayer
• Plyers
• Screw or hole punch. Bradawl will also work
• Wire or cord
• Pop Fasteners or other closing elements such as Velcro, buttons, or double-sided tape
Steps to Make This:
1. Brayer colors onto the Gel Plate. Use stencils, stamps or found objects to create texture into the
surface of the print.
2. Cover the entire 12 x 24” sheet of craft Plastic with color and texture. Layering colors and
positioning the gel plate on different locations on the sheet each print.
3. This material is going to be used for a small lampshade so cut the 12” x 24” sheet so that you
now have two sheets 6” x 24”.
4. Brayer a darker color of paint to the plate. Take a stencil and place it on top. Using tissue paper blot the
paint from the plate as shown. You will have to do this step twice to cover the entire length of the Craft
Plastic.
5. Once dry pop fasteners were used to close the shade’s cylindrical shape. These add an interesting
design element.
6. Punch small holes at 1” intervals along the long edges of the Craft Plastic. A screw punch was used
here.
7. Take some wire and create links to attach the shade to the lamp rings. (Show tools used). Alternatively
use cord or leather to attach the shade to the rings.
8. Lifestyle shots.
